What Canadians have been too polite to tell Americans, eh?
In one of the most popular programs of the season, on March 10, 2010 the Center for Global Justice presented a panel of Canadians who addressed the topic, "What Canadians have been too polite to tell Americans, eh?" The panel was moderated by Sue Sparrow.
Jenny Formanek led off with a description of the basics of the Canadian political system. Bob Ware followed with a discussion of social movements and public values in Canada. Then Marc Brien showed how these values are reflected in public policy and their social outcomes, contrasting Canada with the highly individualistic US and Sweden, a country with greater social solidarity. Canada turns out to be midway in a continuum between these two extremes. Finally Kevin Hayes looked at the Canadian labour movement. A lively discussion followed.
So popular was this panel that it had to be repeated March 12 to accommodate those who we had to turn away from a full house the first day.
