Film: “Woman at War," starring Halldora Geirharosdottir as an eco-feminist
This film is a taut environmental thriller whose protagonist is a charismatic choir director. It takes place in Iceland shortly after the 2008 financial crisis. We watch Halla go from eco-feminist trying to take down the electric lines that power an aluminum smelter to choir director and good citizen. Halla struggles against polluting corporations and as her actions become riskier and more audacious, a film that could be a reflexive celebration of radical political action instead becomes a thoughtful meditation on the ethics of extremism, the limits of nonviolence and the proper response to global threats that aren’t just environmental or economic but potentially omnicidal.
