Join us on another trip to
Xilitla and Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve

Sierra Gorda vista desde el Mirador de Cuatro PalosThe Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve is one of the largest in Mexico, covering one third of the State of Queretaro, one of the least visited, and named one of the top bio-reserves in the world. The roads take you to panoramic vistas and lush forests. It is home to the most diverse wildlife in any protected area in Mexico and includes the endangered jaguars and military macaws. There are over 800 butterfly species that inhabit the reserve, 110 species of mammals, 339 species of birds and equally diverse plants. Waterfalls and meandering rivers abound.

The trip starts in San Miguel, and we drive to Xilitla for a 3-night stay. On the road you will see fantastic views of the eastern Sierra Madre. Our hotel is located in the center of Xilitla within a couple of blocks of the zocalo, shops and restaurants.

The second day will be dedicated to visiting the Tamul waterfall with a fantastic boat ride through the beautiful turquoise river.  A visit to the Cueva de las Golondrinas will be offered for the visitors who are able to meet the physical challenges of the visit.

The third day we visit Las Pozas where a local guide will take the group through paths and walkways of this unique surreal garden with sculptures and buildings designed by the eccentric Englishman Edward James. Back in Xilitla, a visit to the Leonora Carrington museum -- one of the most famous surrealist artists in Mexico -- awaits you.

After three days in Xilitla, we will travel to Jalpan de Serra, making a stop in Landa de Matamoros to see one of the baroque churches founded by Juan Junípero de Serra. In the afternoon, Roberto Pedroza will give a talk about the Biosphere Reserve and the importance of sustainability in the Sierra Gorda.  This is truly a unique opportunity to learn more about this amazing area from an expert.

The next day we see the Puente de Dios waterfall, a spectacular site with a natural rock-shaped bridge and amazing waterfalls. In the afternoon, we visit the beautiful mission church of Concá with its fascinating baroque façade.

On the last day, returning to San Miguel, we visit the viewpoint in Pinal de Amoles from which you can see the Peña de Bernal before stopping in Bernal for lunch.

The trip will be led by a bilingual guide who has led several trips to Sierra Gorda with the CGJ and others.
