Join the Center for Global Justice in a visit to an amazing community activist/education center-- CEDESA--El Centro de desarrollo agropecuario (The Center for Agricultural Development). CEDESA provides training for local people in many sustainable agricultural technologies as well as ecological practices such as rain-water capture and the construction of dry toilets. They are also avid activists in defense of the territory and have been leaders in the struggles for clean water and to stop open-pit mining in our region. Their goal is to strengthen the productive abilities of local campesinos along with their ability to make autonomous decisions as communities, while broadening their knowledge of the ecological challenges that they face.

CEDESA was founded in 1965 by a catholic priest and several young people involved in the social doctrine of the church who were concerned about they saw as the many necessities and injustices visited on the people of northern Guanajuato. The organization began teaching literacy and other skills to rural campesinos and thoughout the years their mission has evolved to include a wide range of community development projects. Most recently, they have established a community radio -- Radio Cuenca de la Independencia-- that works to reflect and amplify the voice of the people and contribute to social organization for the defense of the territory.
