For the first time in six decades Cuba has a president who is not a Castro and who was born since the 1959 Revolution. The generation that made the Revolution is being replaced with a new generation of leaders. Cuba is changing. Yet there is also continuity. The program of reforms launched in 2011 has changed much in this socialist country, yet much remains unchanged – too much to suit many Cubans who have hopes the new leadership will move things forward more rapidly. For them there is too much continuity.
Cliff DuRand has been leading educational trips to Cuba for 30 years. In that time he has observed many changes, but also much that endures, both good and bad. A founder of the Center for Global Justice and a retired professor of social philosophy, Dr. DuRand will discuss continuity and change in Cuba today. He has just returned from a two week visit that focused on the future of socialism in Cuba.
