El Charco del Ingenio es un proyecto de la sociedad civil organizada desde 1991

Cuya misión es proteger y preservar el patrimonio biocultural, desarrollando un Jardín Etnobotánico dedicado a la conservación y el estudio de la flora regional, así como a la construcción de una cultura ambiental en la sociedad.

Mario Hernández Peña es Director General del Jardín Botánico y Área Natural Protegida “El Charco del Ingenio AC”. En el 2017 recibe el Reconocimiento a la Excelencia en el Desarrollo Profesional por la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. Durante el 2017 recibe del Rotary Midday de San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato el reconocimiento como Ciudadano del Año. Actualmente es Presidente de la Asociación Mexicana de Jardines Botánicos.
