King in the Wilderness

A stirring documentary about the last years of Martin Luther King’s life. It was a time when he came under criticism from his allies in the Movement. The Black Power Movement rejected his philosophy of non-violence. When he went to Chicago in support of the poor, he was criticized for leaving the South. When he spoke out against the U.S. war on Vietnam, he was told to stick to civil rights. But King saw these issues as all interconnected. This was succinctly stated in his Riverside Church speech on April 4, 1967 – exactly one year before his assassination. He spoke about the three evils that troubled his soul – racism, violence both at home and abroad, and the materialism of capitalism. He saw his country as the greatest purveyor of these evils.
