July 4th is a day we celebrate U.S. independence from Britain. Would that some day we celebrate our independence from Wall Street. What are the prospects for socialism in the US or elsewhere? And what kind of socialism? After the failures of socialism in the 20th century, many are rethinking how to build socialism today.

Radhika Desai is a Professor at the Department of Political Studies, and Director, Geopolitical Economy Research Group, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. She is the author of Geopolitical Economy: After US Hegemony, Globalization and Empire (2013). She will discuss prospects for socialism in the US as well as China, Cuba and elsewhere. Socialist economic construction continues to offer the most viable alternative to the globalized capitalist crisis. But how to build it in the midst of a globalized capitalism? That is the question.
