The Green New Deal

The public is waking to the fierce urgency of addressing climate change.  Extreme weather events, melting glaciers, floods and draughts, wild fires, intense heat waves all herald a global climate system out of balance and threatens human civilization as we know it.

In the US progressive leaders have called for a Green New Deal on the scale of the mobilization for World War II.  They have outlined an integrated plan to address the climate emergency.  It calls for a conversion of our energy system away from fossil fuels to renewables like solar and wind that can give good union jobs in clean energy.  It calls for regenerative agriculture to draw carbon out of the atmosphere and enrich the soil to grow healthier food.   It calls for overhauling our transportation system and retrofitting buildings nationwide for energy efficiency.  And much more, addressing not only climate change but a host of connected issues.

Our panel will flesh out the bold ideas of the Green New Deal and visit some of the controversy it has generated.  Some have said it is a grab bag wish list for progressives.  Many have asked how will the transition to clean energy be financed?  What is the political and economic pushback from the fossil fuel industries (oil and coal)?  Doesn’t the Green New Deal just mean more big government?

Yet the challenge of climate change clearly requires action on a massive scale.  It won’t just go away on its own and is getting worse every year.  The clock is ticking.  The future for our children and grandchildren depends on what we do NOW.
