With some 100,000 people dead and disappeared, Mexico's war on drugs is a human tragedy and the biggest policy challenge facing the new government. As the Peña Nieto administration proposes changes in strategy and Mexico's growing peace movement demands a new security model to reduce the violence and corruption, the US government is calling to hold the line. Carlsen will address the current crisis and alternative approaches to the disastrous war on drugs.
Based in Mexico City, Laura Carlsen is the director of the Americas Program of the Center for International Policy and writes for U.S. and international media.
