Las cooperativas han sido una herramienta de desarrollo económico y comunitario particularmente importante en las comunidades negras debido a sus beneficios económicos y sociales. El Movimiento Cooperativo Afroamericano va en paralelo con el Movimiento de Derechos Civiles y ha sido un socio silencioso en la prolongada lucha por la Liberación Negra.

Muchos de los participantes en la historia de las cooperativas afroamericanas, son las mismas personas que se hicieron famosas por sus actividades de derechos civiles. De hecho, algunos líderes negros se iniciaron en el Movimiento Cooperativo. Las mujeres negras en particular han sido una parte integral del Movimiento Cooperativo Negro, similar a sus roles realizados en la Iglesia Negra, las Sociedades de Ayuda Mutua y el Movimiento de Derechos Civiles.
