Reckoning with Racism: Exposing the Underbelly

Kali Holloway

Kali Holloway is a journalist who has been a prolific writer on issues of racism. We will talk with her about her writings and the reckoning with racism now going on in the United States.Since the police murder of George Floyd and the ensuing Black Lives Matter protests that rocked the country last year, racism has been front and center in much of our nation’s public discussion. We are challenged to address systemic racism in our institutions, public and private practices and in our collective memory.

Our national history is being contested. The importance of slavery since 1619 in shaping the nation, oppression and exploitation of Black people ever since, continuing discrimination today and the rule of white power is the dark underside of the nation’s history. Many feel threatened by it, clinging to the illusion that the US is a shining city on a hill, a beacon to the world of liberty and democracy.Reacting to the fuller story of the country, they are passing laws in many states banning the teaching of Critical Race Theory.

Kali Holloway will discuss all this and more. She is a columnist for The Nation and the director of the Make It Right Project, a new national campaign to take down Confederate monuments and tell the truth about history. Her writing has appeared in Salon, The Guardian, The Daily Beast, Time, AlterNet, Truthdig, The Huffington Post, The National Memo, Jezebel, Raw Story, and numerous other outlets.
